As someone who has read the Post for decades (even getting it in the dead-tree version when I was overseas with the Foreign Service), I understand your charity toward O'Neal but have harsher sentiments personally. Especially in the present crisis, there is no excuse and little obvious explanation for the ravages he inflicted on the opinion section, which was once one of the paper's strongest elements. I can only hope that in his future career (whatever it is), he is treated as his behavior at the Post deserves.

One could argue that the harm O'Neal did was what Bezos desired, and that if O'Neal had refused Bezos would have found another cat's paw. The best answer to that assertion is from Solzhenitsyn: "You can resolve to live your life with integrity. Let your credo be this: Let the lie come into the world, let it even triumph. But not through me."
