Media Maelstrom: Three things mainstream media needs to do — or stop doing. Once and for all.
Please, journalists, these things are not hard
Link out. Come on, Big Journalism, is it so hard to hyper-link to primary documents such as court decisions? Take the story last week about a court ruling that revealed that prosecutor Jack Smith’s team had gotten a search warrant for former President Trump’s Twitter account. Neither the New York Times nor the Associated Press saw fit to provide a link to the ruling. To its credit, Politico —whose Kyle Cheney broke the story — did, and so did the Washington Post. Seems to me that we engender greater trust with greater transparency. Maybe the fear is that we’re leading readers away from our own sites with these links. Too bad. It’s still the right thing to do. Not everyone will want to dig deeper and read, say, an indictment or a court decision, but some will and they ought to get the chance.
