We took democracy for granted and we just might lose it. If we can hang on to it, we must never take it for granted again.

I don’t think the question was full answered. I think the media needs to be more reflective on its own actions such as the horrific news conferences and headline horse race journalism. Even the pbs-npr folks are too invested and dependent on cable network. I don’t want to see polling pundits, I want to see thoughtful policy makers

Correct observations (especially the need to understand and engage state level government). However, we’re well on the way to a hereditary aristocracy ruling this country. 2 doz billionaires in 1990, nearly 700 now, along with tens of thousands of ultra wealthy individuals and families reaping the rewards of a tilted playing field. Traditional checks (voting rights & media) are undermined in places and being assaulted in others.

I don’t believe we’ll have the luxury of complacency a dozen years from now unless the 18-40 yo demographic becomes engaged in the system of self government. Gov. (Then Dr.) Howard Dean said a bike path project drew him in. We need more open doors for young people and turn over the controls to them.
